The “Wrong” Way to Play Halo

camping-high-ground-120907.jpgA while back I wrote a snappy little post about a nice spot to camp in High Ground. According to some dude (or chick), I’m doing it all wrong and I don’t play the right way.

Apparently this dude (or chick) has a problem with people using cover, poppin’ fools with a BR, staying out of harm’s way and winning slayer matches because he said, in a comment on that post: “no r gay play the game the right way”

I guess playing the game in a way that helps you win is wrong? There’s a problem with using all the tools in the game to help yourself and team?

So this begs the question; Is camping wrong?

I’m gonna say “hell no” because it’s IN THE GAME. Bungie allows you to do it and gives you a little reward by removing yourself from the radar. I’m guessing they put all the weapons in the game because they expect you to use them - just like crouching and standing still.

Do I like playing against people who camp all day?

No, I don’t, but that doesn’t make it wrong - But it definately makes me change my strategy and play at a much slower pace.

That’s one of the great things about Halo: You can play however the hell you want - And screw everybody else. Whether you’re a jumping, running, in-your-face melee pro or a full-time camper, I say “do whatever helps you to win.”

And winning is the name of the game.

P.S. And here’s a little tip for all you complainers - it’s kind of a “life lesson” but applies to Halo 3 too:

Spend a little more time worrying about yourself and a little less time worrying about what other people are doing.

You are damn right! You are supposed to use cover to help your game. Would you rather just run straight at an opponent and die a thousand times till you got the point! Hiding, Using Cover, Assassins, whatever, if it is in the game, use it!

There is nothing wrong with what you are doing. You are holding down and area of the map and providing cover for your team. The person that made the comment just needs to loosen up their bicycle helmet and stop drooling all over your kills. Screw them, keep playing the way you are. I also totally agree with your quote from the classic known as Ferris Bueler’s Day Off.

I’m going to be the odd ball and complain about those that camp nonstop in the game. It’s great that you’re providing “cover” for your team and taking advantage of the scenery to protect you from damage, but if you do that the whole game, well, asshole is in my vocabulary at that time.

I’ll admit to camping for a few seconds when it comes to various maps, but I don’t do it throughout the map. I’m going to go where the fire is at and take advantage of getting those kills in.

Camping shouldn’t equate to winning. It’s just a tactic, and really, I can’t stand it.

You can complain about it all you want, but the real problem with someone camping is that they are out playing you.

I will admit it too I don’t like campers and I don’t really camp myself, but you can’t call that person a cheater for playing the game with some intelligence.

If someone is camping, take a minute to devise a plan with your teammates to take them out. Devising a plan shouldn’t be that hard because you know where the person is and you already have their pattern down.

For example if a person like this is camping on High Ground the most powerful weapon they could have is a BR or SR. Grab the “rocks” and shoot some up there then have your other teammates go in for some close quarters action. I know it sounds simple, but that was off the top of my head if I was in a game I am sure I could come up with a couple ideas.

When it all boils down to it, anyone that says camping is cheating they are just out played and they are trying to find any reason to point the finger at other then themselves.

Just take a breather go after some of the other team members avoid that area and then come back when you are level headed again. If you keep rushing the same spot you are going to get owned.

Einstein said, “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

@nine7sicks976 - I suppose what really comes into play is what kind of camping a team is doing. Have you ever just had someone sit in the oddest fucking place ever, only to run by them and then get assassinated?

It’s not even team work at that point, because this person is just camping at your base doing this (and the map I’ve seen this happen on the most is Narrows.)

We’re obviously all thinking of different variances of camping here, but regardless, I don’t care if you think it’s a great tactic and teamwork (because camping =! teamwork.)

It’s just taking advantage of people when they least expect it. It happens, and it’ll keep happening.

I just think it’s a poor way to execute a great game.

WOW! Look at the passionate comments on this post - Who knew camping was such a hot topic.

Thanks everybody for your input. Let’s not forget that we’re all on the same team here! Hey, nobody is right or wrong either. So let’s all agree to disagree. Whadday say?

And while we’re on the subject lemme throw some fuel on the fire…

I agree with Raine that sitting in a dark corner and “taking advantage of people when they least expect it” is the most frustrating feeling ever

It’s because I NEVER look for people who might be crouched, standing still and/or camping…

And when the kill me without warning I’m ready to smash the controller at that point.

However, I think it’s makes the game more fun because it’s unpredictable. Nobody plays the same way and it forces you to implement some sort of strategy.

I love the passion this game/it’s gamers have.

    freaking awesome.

I’ll tell ya what. If I know you’re there, I might just crouch and wait for you to come out. That’s the smack down baby!! If I did it everytime, everyone would know and I wouldn’t live long. That’s me being stupid. So don’t be stupid!!!

hellz yeah, if i know someones gonna come out of THAT door in the next few seconds ill sit and beat down the bastard. if someones gonna hide against me ill just take the guy down or go somewhere else and rape his team mates while theyre a player down! this entire genre of game demands strategy and camping IS a strategy. it just irritates people that they can be beaten with little skill on their opponents behalf. just chill grap some fire and get back in there and teach the guy that ur gonna win that round no matter what tricks he pulls!

well i agree with you completely. if you pick up a S.r or B.r what kind of morons going to abandon that amazing piece of cover and charge blindly at the enemy? your always going to get people complaining about campers but in reality its just that your going for that shiny win and theyre losing. u guys wanna see how to stop campers, hit rank 35 and go into lone wolves. iv never seen anyone be able to camp for more than a minute. you stand still and everyone knows where you are, theyre just an easy target >=D

camping is not wrong by any means, annoying at times but not wrong.

In all truth if you can’t take down a camper then you might as well just practice and ignore playing live for a while ;)

Camping is one of the best team strategies that i’ve ever used. By setting up a location and knowing the exits/entrances, its easy to tell teammates when and where you need help.
When you need to take down campers, all you need to do is get your team together for an organized strike. everyone should know your not going to take out campers on your own, i don’t care if you have the rockets…

nah, theyre both right, if campers are making your life miserable, maybe your just having difficulty living with the possiblity that the opposition is a better team, or just plain better than you =P

Hey, camping is a legitimate strategy..
I camp sometimes, killed plenty. Got killed by plenty of campers too. But I dont mind it at all though haha. I’ll just curse at how i didnt take enough precaution thats all.. lol. Dont be sore losers yeah haha

but i wonder why sometimes rocket guys manage to kill you, but they dont die when you’re at point blank range..

People who dont like campers are just angry that they get killed all the time by the camper or becouse they run into a big battle while the camper lives to tell the tale.
There is nothing wrong with camping.

Anyone know any Army or Marine snipers personally? It would be really awesome if someone did. I would love to see the look on their face and hear the “are you ****ing kidding me?” in their voice when you asked them if they thought “camping” was cheating in combat. *sigh*

so yes camping isnt exactly the most skill requiring tactic to use. Sure you pick the right spots

Ive found myself stalking the Construct lifts but is it really all I can do?

i belive there is lots of speculation over the whole issue of “camping” lets face it if you have a gud shooting posish then the only way you are going to give it up is if you die but i belive that it reflects on the person me personaly i like to go in guns blazing and most times come out on top but if its snipers i do find a place to ” camp” because then they come to you and they die this debate will go on for eva so you are either with one side against camping or you are for it thats just how i see it any ways.

I used to hate camping. I would rush into the action with a devil may care attitude, and try and smoke my opponents. Even though this worked most of the time I still would go 1 for 1 kill or maybe 2 for 1. I never camped until I played doubles with a General, that was an amazing Halo player. After a couple of hours hanging out with, and learning from him, I started going from plus 3 or 4 a match, to plus 15 or so. This was due to camping. NOT SPAWN camping, but finding a good spot with cover, that the opposite team has a hard time reaching. Patience is a hard virtue to learn, especially in HALO, however the slow and steady pace wins the game. Now I hope that people rush in at me again, and again. I rack up Killing spree’s alot now, and when you are going positive every game, you are really HELPING your team out. I still get mad when the other team hides, and camps, and wins. But I do employ this stategy quite a bit, and it has increased all of my stats.

You’re right, camping in Halo 3 can be stopped in a variety of ways. If you don’t have the brains to find the right weapon to stop the camper you’re trying to kill? Maybe you shouldn’t be playing on live at all. Go back to Halo 2 if you’re going to complain about it.

Now Call of Duty 4 camping is a whole different story, camping in that game is what really gets on my nerves. M16 + Stopping power equals a one hit kill. Anybody can camp and kill in that game. But H3 is way different.

Any strategy can be applied AND countered. Personally, I don’t camp, at all. Camping doesn’t increase your skill in H3 at all. And once you level up more, camping doesn’t help you at all. Good aim and good use of nades helps you the most.

Camping is an okay strategy. Besides, if you’re killed by the same camper twice, shame on you. Campers are incredibly easy to root out, too. Just use the good ol’ crouch and melee their back.

holding a certain area of the map is a tacticl and skillful thing to acheive. reognising an area where you can at the power weapons and avoid fire is all about knowledge of the game, amping is totally dferent. holding the map area is skillful, camping is not.

  42. Posted July 24, 2008 at 8:54 pm | Permalink

Being a Marine sniper I have learned that holding a position is by all means a great tactical move. So to all those anti-campers out there nobody ever drowned in sweat so every time you play a camper, be afraid, because they will kill you until the move positions. Then wait for 2minutes and the spree starts.
