Rex Grossman for MVP of last year’s Super Bowl? Name the last MVP that you’ve heard of in the non-Halo 3 world that didn’t win his/her respective game. I’m waiting … that’s what I thought. Now, tell me how this happens - in a game of Team Slayer, I dominate in all aspects and win the game for my team, just to see a player on the losing team named the MVP! This happens all too often, not just to me, but also my Halo buds. I’ve been driven to the point of frustration and some disbelief which lead me to combing the web to figure out the way Bungie determines this “so-called” MVP award.
Thanks to our friends over at 1up.com for asking the question for us to Bungie’s Halo 3 User Interface Designer, Colm Nelson. Here’s what he had to say:
“The MVP will be awarded to the player with the highest statistical ranking in a team game regardless of whether his team won or lost. This will be based on a ratio from the player’s performance in the game as compared to his teammates. The player with the highest “ratio” will get the MVP, and the ratios will be game specific. With the MVP award that guy who was really a star for his team gets some recognition after the game, even if his team lost.”
Does that answer your question of why you got the most kills, the most medals, and the highest kill-death ratio AND WON, to see a dude on the losing team get the MVP award? We’ll it didn’t really answer mine completely, but its a start. Now onto combing the WWW for this so-called “ratio” equation.

I’m with you. The MVP results are jacked! The other night we played and our team won, I had the most kills, largest K/D spread and the most medals but someone else on our team got MVP. Huh? He had a good game but he did not have any of the above. I mean I’m all about givin’ props but I just want to understand the system.
Get to work Trang, I want to understand the ratio!

Haha I was waiting for someone to mention something about the MVP bullcrap. It happens to me way too often. And that’s a nice picture, Rex Grossman loves getting packed by Green Bay ^_^ Too bad I’m an Eagles fan and have no room to talk
It’s not uncommon to see an MVP on a losing team, regardless of what it’s for. Even so, it’s fucking Halo 3, and to whine about it like you’re being denied the most extravagant prize, is pretty damn lame.
Even so, you get the MVP when you have the most kills/medals. You’ll never see someone with less kills than the highest get MVP. So your saying that “why you got the most kills, the most medals, and the highest kill-death ratio AND WON, to see a dude on the losing team get the MVP award” is actually the opposite. The person who GETS the most kills, is often always the MVP.
When people are tied for the highest kills, just from what I see in the stats, they base it off of who has the most medals, and not so much the K/D ratio.
Oh and this should be pretty clear: “The MVP will be awarded to the player with the highest statistical ranking…”
If you got the highest stats in a match, but didn’t get awarded MVP you’re either lying, or there was some sort of lag/glitch (although I hate saying glitch, since people blame EVERYTHING on them as if it’s the only scapegoat for your shitty playing.)
Does it really matter? I mean, sure everyone likes to gloat to their friends about getting the MVP but still, nobody’s going to remember who got the MVP of a single game… I’m going to be happy getting my Exp/Skill point and move on, regardless if I got the MVP or if I managed to scrape out a -11 K/D spread.
i really dont care about the MVP of a game i just care if I or my Team wins or not
well from wat ive seen it doesnt matter what your K\D ratio is, or your medals, just how many kills you get. if 2 or more people are tied for the highest kills, its just random. ive had the same amount of kills as the other leading scorer and i had more medals, and he still got it…
hahaha i got the MVP medal my first match hahaha
I agree on the MVP award and not because Im always getting screwed cuz sometimes I will get it and wonder HOW!?! The guy on the other team did way better. lol. I think there should be some kind of “tally” system when two people get the same amount of kills. Compare the medals, the KD, the assists, avg life… I mean everything.
